'Powers' in Doubt at FX

Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's Powers pilot is in a holding pattern at FX, and there's some question as to whether it will see the light of day. FX president/GM John Landgraf described the show as the most difficult television adaptation he's ever worked on, and while there was talk a few months ago of it going back for reshoots it's now not clear things will even progress that far.

"We didn't pick the pilot of Powers up; we went back and Chick Eglee, who had written it, did a fairly substantial rewrite that would require pretty extensive reshoots of the pilot. Right now we're in the process of deciding whether to pull the trigger on the reshoot."

He went on to express further doubt on the show.

"This is as difficult an adaptation as I've ever worked on. Difficult adaptations interest me but this is a really hard one."

In light of the public's current appetite for all things comic-related, and FX's track record with challenging, intelligent programming - to say nothing of fellow Image Comics alumn Robert Kirman's success with The Walking Dead on AMC, this comes as a bit of a surprise to me, though there's undoubtedly more to the story. What are your thoughts and theories, on the future of the Powers pilot?

Bendis on Glenn Beck: "He's Just an Idiot."

There's one more reason to love super-scribe Brian Michael Bendis, as he reacts to the furor and doublespeak and "liberal bias" charges leveled by, let's face it, xenophobic racists up in arms over the new Ultimate Spider-Man, the biracial Miles Morales. Rather than engage in the rather pointless act of debating with people fueled by hate and fear of X-Men level proportions, he took on the face of right wing punditry, former Spider-Man fanatic Glenn Beck, who called Ultimate Spider-Man/Ultimate Fallout a "stupid comic book" and accused Bendis of kowtowing to Michelle Obama (seriously).

Bendis' response?

“We pissed off Glenn Beck, and that was amazing. I don’t think Glenn Beck is an idiot because he’s a conservative. I literally think he’s just an idiot. Regardless of his belief system, he’s just a lunatic. So that was hilarious…I told my wife that she doesn’t have to get me anything for my birthday because nothing will make me happier than this made me.”

Wonder Man's Revengers: Earth's WTF-iest Villains

(Click here or on the image to enlarge)

'Revengers resemble!'

As rallying crys go it's pretty weak, but so is the name 'Revengers,' and any team with D-Man on the roster.

The really amazing thing about this is, I have every confidence that Brian Michael Bendis will turn this team of D-listers into a force to be reckoned with, because that's just how he rolls. Any guy who voluntarily writes like a dozen titles a month is a guy who likes a challenge, and turning this team into a threat to the likes of Luke Cage, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and The freakin' THING - is a challenge.

Wonder Man is, apparently, pissed at the Avengers for reforming - he sees them as a threat to the world, and he's got pretty much Bendis's entire tenure on the title as a legitimate argument in his favor. Now, how that concern for the world makes him go all evil, and drives him to recruit a bunch of unemployed nutcases in spandex, that's yet to be explained. As is D-Man's involvement - longtime Captain America fans know that D-Man is a hardcore Cap loyalist, and I have to think it would take a lot to convince him to turn on a team that was formed under Cap's auspices, but then again, maybe he's got a mad-on for this particular group of Avengers since being passed over for Squirrel Girl as the Cage baby's nanny.

The Avengers vs. Revengers battle takes place in the upcoming New Avengers Annual #1, and it reunites Bendis with Secret War artist Gabriele Dell’Otto in what promises to be a battle for the ages. Not kidding. My sense about this one is, Bendis wants you to think it's a big goof.

So that he can blow your mind with like, one of the best books of the year.

This is all just educated guesswork, from a fan of Bendis from way back in his Sam & Twitch days. We'll see how it plays out when the Revengers take their wacky line-up and goofy name to the front door of Avengers Mansion on September 7.
