Superman's Spectacularly Awful '70s Musical

Oh, internet, you never fail to unearth the best and worst of pop culture past. After George Reeves but before Christopher Reeve was the musical It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman!, a musical oddity with a short run on Broadway in the 1960s. Despite its many failings, the trashterpiece was dusted off and polished for an airing on ABC in 1975, because really it was much harder to find ways to fill time back then. I'm assuming. I think Nathan Fillion would have knocked this one out of the park, but sadly it was before his time, and so courtesy of Everything is Terrible, take a look at the highlights of the Superman musical that was.

Earth 2's Superman

Another day, another Jim Lee Earth 2 design. Superman is the big reveal of the day, with a slightly more old-school look. It seems that the red underpants may never return, but here we have a compromise in the form of a - well, a really big belt/girdle thing.

Apparently the Earth 2 of the New 52 is quite different from the pre-reboot multiverse, which represented the characters and values of a bygone age. This Earth is a fightin' world. Editor Pat McCallum teases suggests a very dark Superman in The Source:

“What would you have to do to teach Superman to kill… Just how far can you bend the Man of Steel before he breaks?”

More to the point, who stands a chance against a murderous Superman? I suppose we'll find out when Worlds' Finest and Earth 2 hit the stands in May.

'Superman vs. the Elite' First Look

With Justice League: Doom set for release at the end of the month, DC is already prepping it's next direct-to-DVD animated release, Superman: vs. The Elite. Adapted from Joe Kelly's story from Action Comics #775, "What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?", the Elite are a not-so-sublte swipe at The Authority. TV Guide posted this first image from the film, which is likely to be released later this year to coincide with San Diego Comic-Con.

Action Comics #9 Introduces Superman from a Parallel Earth

The countdown to the premiere of the multiverse to DC's New 52 begins in Action Comics #9, which introduces a Superman from another Earth, in two stories illustrated by Gene Ha and Cully Hamner.

With ACTION COMICS #9, two acclaimed guest artists will explore an alternate Earth and the story of its Kryptonian protector. Multiple Eisner Award-winning artist Gene Ha will be a guest artist for the primary plot, penned by regular series writer Grant Morrison. And fresh from his recent work on THE SHADE miniseries, artist Cully Hamner will illustrate the issue’s back-up story, written by Sholly Fisch.

Parallel worlds come to the forefront of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” with titles such as EARTH 2 and WORLDS’ FINEST exploring the adventures of heroes on alternate Earths. ACTION COMICS #9 sets up the multiverse with a standalone story of a Superman from another Earth, who must fight a monster from yet another parallel world. But this isn’t just any monster; it’s a Superman surrogate known as Superdoom, twisted into an unstoppable agent of evil.

The back-up story will also feature an adventure of this alternate Superman, set on his parallel Earth.

Regular series artist Rags Morales will return for ACTION COMICS #10 in June. In the meantime, check out Ha’s inks for ACTION COMICS #9.

'Smallville' Returns as a Comic

Those of us who were saddened to see Bryan Q Millar no longer publishing work at DC in the wake of the New 52 reboot can rejoice - the Q is returning, along with artists Pere Perez (interiors) and Cat Staggs (cover art), as the creative team of Smallville Season 11. Like Buffy Season 8, it's a continuation of the property as a comic, where presumably a Superman title should feel right at home.

Smalliville Season 11 will premiere as a weekly digital series, beginning April 13. The first print collection will be released May 16.
