'Transformers 3' Dominates Box Office, Shatters Records

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was the top-grossing film at the box office this weekend, making an estimated $97.4 million. That's a new high for the July Fourth weekend, breaking the record previously held by Spider-Man 2, which grossed $88.2 million this weekend in 2004. Transformers also had the most lucrative opening weekend of 2011 to date, beating out Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which had a $90.1 million opening earlier this summer.

'Transformers 3' Recycles Footage From 'The Island'

Well, that's awkward. I mean I know there are only so many ways to shoot an exploding car race, but this is just out-and-out laziness on the part of Michael Bay, who appears to have shamelessly lifted footage from his 2005 film The Island for use in Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.

I suppose if you're stealing from yourself it's a victimless crime - unless you count the audience, of course.

Transformers 3/Little Mermaid Mash-Up

The tendency of every movie released by a major studio since 1986 or so to follow the Hero's Journey storytelling formula to the letter has led to some brilliant mash-ups in the YouTube era. Here, we have The Little Mermaid set to the soundtrack of the trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and of course it synchs up perfectly. No offense to either film, but I wonder if maybe it's time to start thinking outside the blockbuster box. Just sayin'.

French Transformers 3 Trailer Shows New Footage, Characters

Plus, perhaps appropriately given that the full title of the film is Transformers: Dark of the Moon, we actually get to hear someone say 'croissant'!

Mmm buttery.

But yes, this trailer is pretty awesome and shows us more than we in the states have glimpsed of the film thus far, including the first looks at John Malkovich and Patrick Dempsey.

Enjoy, mes amis!

Summer Movie Posters Done Lego-Style

With the arrival of Thor in US theaters, Summer movie season has officially begun. This is comics and sci-fi film's biggest year yet, with multiple franchises from each of the big two comics publishers expected to dominate the box office, not to mention the grand finale of the Harry Potter series and new entries from Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean.

I hope your local theater has good air-conditioning, 'cause we're going to be spending a lot of time at the movies.

Check out these awesome LEGO renditions of the posters for the biggest movies of the Summer.
