Tom Hiddleston: Loki Gets Nastier in 'The Avengers'

Thor's half-brother and arch-nemesis Loki, as portrayed in the comics, often vacillates between damaged but possibly redeemable villain who maybe just needs some hug therapy, and over-the-top evil. We saw more of the former in Thor - look for the latter to rear his ugly head in The Avengers.

Loki actor Tom Hiddleston told MTV:

“In ‘The Avengers’ [Loki is] really dark and kind of sociopathic, or maybe even psychopathic is the word, in a deluded way. Obviously I haven’t let go of the spiritual damage at the heart of him, it still comes from that lost place, but he’s just incredibly nasty. I think that probably in ‘Thor 2′ his previous actions will, he’ll have to take responsibility for what he’s done.”

So, no redemption for the God of Mischief anytime soon - though Hiddleston holds out hope that might come in time.

“The great thing about Loki is there is potential in him for greatness and awfulness, for great heroism and great villainy. There are still, even within ‘The Avengers,’ there are moments where you see within Loki a glimmer of hope and that possibility of redemption. Nobody is black and white, there are shades of gray in all of us. We all have potential for greatness and we all have flaws. I for one am championing the redemption… This isn’t definitely going to happen, but I think there would be nothing more awesome than seeing Loki and Thor fight somebody side by side.”

Watch a Guy Design and Craft a THOR Hammer

No, seriously, this guy renders and then crafts a freaking Thor hammer at a foundry. He's also apparently working on combustion engines, and probably like making a MODOK or something. Garen Philllips spent a month making making a Mjolnir, and he walks you through the insanely extensive process in this video.

'The Consultant' - SHIELD Agent Coulson Video Short

I'll be honest, I don't like SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson. He is easily my least favorite part of the Marvel movie franchise. He is a lazy storytelling vehicle, he represents Disney marketing's unreasonable authority over scripts, and when he shows up it's always for the same reason: to stop whatever is happening in the actual movie, and spout a bunch of buzzwords to generate false excitement for The Avengers.

Maybe it's because I was already excited and didn't need his assistance, but this rubs me the wrong way. He's like the little square in the bottom of your TV screen reminding you of the show that's on next. If Thanos were to show up and Agent Coulson in the dick, that would be just fine with me.

That said, he has some fans. Plus, he ties the stories together because - well, that's why he exists. So, here's a short featurette in which Coulson gets the spotlight: The Consultant, one of the extras that will be included on the Thor DVD/Blu-ray, in stores September 13.

New 'Avengers' Promo Art (Now With More Hulk!)

This promo art that Marvel is showing book retailers for their upcoming Avengers tie-in, a trade collection titled Road to the Avengers, gives us a good look at what sort of Hulk we'll be seeing. The Hulk is the biggest wild card of the film, as both of the movies starring the jade giant this past decade were notable box office and critical failures, and have been somewhat disowned by Marvel in that they're certainly not seen as runners-up to The Avengers in the way that Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America are - despite a Cap-related easter egg on the DVD for The Incredible Hulk.

So unlike the other Marvel heroes, who will be building on continuity from their hit films, the new Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, is, for all practical purposes, being rebooted  for what is likely to be Marvel's definitive franchise for the years to come.

I think he looks pretty badass - less like the "Hulk just want to be left alone" brooder, and more of a scrapper with the strength and confidence to pick a fistfight with Zeus. That one didn't end will, but still. You've gotta be hardcore to even to step into that ring.

Here's Marvel's official synopsis for Road to the Avengers:

Gear up for the upcoming Avengers movie with these official in-movie continuity stories starring Avengers mainstays Iron Man, Captain America and the Agents S.H.I.E.L.D.! First, it's an expanded re-imagining of the original Iron Man, featuring bonus scenes not in the movie! Then, it's an all-new Iron Man adventure! What happened between the events of Iron Man and Iron Man 2? How did Tony Stark put a new chapter in the history books? And how did Iron Man break and rewrite all the rules? Then, it's Black Widow, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson in espionage action! Think you know S.H.I.E.L.D.? Check out what you DIDN'T see in the movies! And finally, it's the official comics prequel to the blockbuster Captain America! Steve Rogers is the inspiration for millions during the dark days of World War Two -- but where did he get his inspiration from? How did he meet his best friend, "Bucky" Barnes? And what set him on the path to becoming the First Avenger? Experience an all-new Cap adventure on the European battlefields.

'Avengers': Downey and Hemsworth On Who Would Win If Iron Man and Thor Fought

The Avengers are out in force this weekend at Disney's D23 Expo - movie footage is being screened to wide acclaim, and the stars are doing the publicity thing, charming the press.

In this clip, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth are interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and asked who would win if Iron Man and Thor fought one another. Downey pretty much nails it.
