Kevin Smith tweeted his thoughts after watch a screening of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo:
Final thoughts on GIRL: Though too rapey, damn fine filmmaking. Reconfirms all men are scum AND that the world needs a Chick Batman.
Well said. No comment on where this excellent grasp of the social narrative was while making Jersey Girl, Clerks 2, or Batman: The Widening Gyre, but the wisdom of Snoogans is at least fully evident via social media, arguably the most important venue these days.
Another unmade Kevin Smith movie, another awesome-looking comic from Dynamite Entertainment. Smith's re-imagined Bionic Man, co-written by Phil Hester, will debut in September, featuring art by Jonathan Lau with Alex Ross on cover art duty. Check out this sneak preview.
The super-NSFW trailer for Kevin Smith's film Red State is going to make Bill O'Reilly spontaneously combust. I remember attending a premiere for Smith's Dogma years ago, and being pelted with trash by protesters telling me I was going to Hell. I was startled, way back then, to see such puritanical outrage on the streets of New York City.
We're living in a very different world now. Outrage is the watchword, and religious intolerance is one of many forces tearing the world, and the country, apart. In the immediate wake of the horrific tragedy in Norway, committed in the name of one man's vision of god, and in light of America's insane response to the incident - ripping into the "liberal media" for reporting the facts about this particular monster and his devout religious fervor, rather than mourning those lost and hoping for peace - the trailer for Kevin Smith's newest film hits way too close to home.
It's not going to stop the spread of the secular, god-hating liberal media bogeyman myth anytime soon, that's a given. But it looks awesome, and unfortunately, it looks terribly relevant.
Distribution for this film has been super-weird, as it's been bypassing anything resembling traditional movie openings, instead traveling around the country roadshow-style. Kevin Smith will be joining the next set of screenings, in Los Angeles, and then Red State will launch on Video-on-Demand on September 1.
Kevin Smith and SModcast Pictures are proud to announce a one week exclusive Academy Award qualifying run of Red State beginning Friday, August 19th at Quentin Tarantino’s legendary New Beverly Cinema. Each screening of Red State will be followed by a live Q&A with writer - director Kevin Smith.
Red State had its controversial and much talked about debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where Smith bought the distribution rights for $20.
Smith decided to self distribute the film and immediately set up 15 special screenings throughout the U.S. as part of the “Red State U.S.A. Tour”. The tour began at the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York on March 5th and finished one month later at the infamous Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
More information is available at the Red State website.
Midtown Comics is hosting a couple of big celebrity signings this weekend.
It starts Friday, at Midtown Times Square, when Kevin Smith shows up to talk Red State, and sign Green Hornet comics - all of which will be 50% off. Kevin will be on hand from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., after which he will resume his busy Twitter schedule.
Saturday, at Midtown Downtown - yeah, not sure that Midtown knew that they were going to expand around the city when they came up with their name, a little short-sighted in retrospect - but anyway, this one's huge.
Amber Benson. Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Tara. Actress, author, Macarena performer.
Amber will be signing her novel Serpent's Storm from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Author Anton Strout will also be on hand signing his book Dead Waters and probably feeling as neglected as Amber feels crowded, so after you've basked in the awesome that is Amber, stop by and give the guy some love too, wouldja?
via VultureAt this morning's screening of Red State, Kevin Smith spent most of his time onstage discussing last night's already notorious premiere, but it was a mere warm-up to what he was about to unleash on Twitter: a two-hour, 69-tweet self-defense.
Up 'till now I was so busy marveling at the fact that they let Kevin Smith write comics (or movies, post '96 for that matter), that I didn't even notice that Baphomet has total Joe Camel penis-face!
See, a second read-through, even of trash like Batman: The Widening Gyre, can be very illuminating!
