December is Photo Cover Month at IDW

IDW Publishing has announced that December 2011 is Photo Cover Month, and as you can see they're taking it a few steps beyond photo covers as we know them. It's not uncommon for licensed books like Star Trek to feature variant photo covers featuring cast members of films and TV shows, but when's the last time you saw a vintage Cobra action figure, posed for action, on the cover of a comic?

Speaking as a G.I. Joe comics collector since Real American Hero #1 (my god I'm old), I'm going to go out on a limb and say never.

G.I. Joe and Transformers action figure dioramas will share the stands with snazzy cast photo covers, and participating books will also feature illustrated covers.

IDW's Photo Cover Month comics are as follows:

Cobra #8
Doctor Who #12
Eternal Descent Vol. II, #2
G.I. Joe #8
G.I. Joe: Real American Hero #173
Transformers #31
Transformers: The Death of Optimus Promie
True Blood: The French Quarter #5
Snake Eyes #8
Star Trek #4

IDW Zombies? There's an App for That.

If you haven't been hiding in a bunker waiting out the zombie apocalypse - well, actually, now might be a good time to start - but assuming you're still out among the living you've doubtless borne witness to IDW's first major multi-title event, Infestation. The undead are no longer the sole province of the Zombies vs. Robots universe, they're munching flesh and generally wrecking havoc in the worlds of G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, Star Trek and Transformers.

And now they're coming for your iDevice.

iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad one or two - they can all be loaded up with IDW's handy Infestation app, a convenient and awesome app featuring digital versions of the preview, an issue checklist, a cover gallery and character designs.  You can purchase a digital copy of infestation #1 for $.99, and follow the action from there over the next several weeks as the event plays out across multiple titles, all of which will be available for purchase as digital comics from within the app.

Oh yeah, and there's going to be a digital comics exclusive of some sort around the time of the finale at the end of April.

iDW has been a leader in digital comics, with their own app, and stand-alone apps for Star Trek, Transformers, G.I. Joe and True Blood comics. I've seen only the best from them to date and expect the same from the Infestation app (I've downloaded it, but haven't had time to sink my teeth into it yet).

You can pick up the free app from the app store on your iPhone/Pad/etc., or just click here to get it from iTunes.

"Never Say Never" Director to Helm G.I. Joe Sequel

Justin Bieber and G.I. Joe now have something in common.

Well yes, they're both action figures. Y'know what, that Bieber thing is not an action figure. That is a doll. Built to scale.

No, what the Joes and the Bieb now share is a common director: Justin Bieber: Never Say Never's John Chu will take the reigns for the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Chu says his Joe will be "a movie for the real Joe fans that hasn't been done before."

Dat Baroness Ass

In keeping with the Sexy Saturday theme we've got going here at Comics Cavern, and to make amends  for the mildly disturbing Sonic the Hegehog's Top 10 Sexiest Females clip, here's a lovely Baroness cosplayer for ya.

She's not bad - she's just dressed that way.

IDW's Infestation #1 Gets Second Printing

Infestation, the first multi-title crossover event from IDW Publishing, kicked off in a big way this week with the release of Infestation #1.

Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning with art by David Messina, Infestation #1 lays out events in IDW's world of Zombies vs. Robots that set the stage for the menace facing the universes of G.I. Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters and Star Trek.

The highly-anticipated title is sold out, but a second printing will hit comics shops February 16.

February also sees the release of the first Infestation tie-in titles, Transformers: Infestation #1 and #2, and Star Trek: Infestation #1 and #2.
