Fantastic Four Movie Cast Rumors Get Wackier - Vampire Bill as Dr. Doom?

File under amusing but highly unlikely: comicbookmovie.com reports that Marvel is supposedly trying to get Stephen Moyer, True Blood's Vampire Bill, to play Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movie reboot that we're all gossiping about to try to distract us from the pending cinematic nightmare that is X-Men: First Class.

The two previous Fantastic Four films, released in 2005 and 2007 respectively, turned a decent profit for 20th Century Fox but received poor reception from both critics and fans. The studio has now decided to take the franchise in a new direction by way of a reboot. The new Fantastic Four franchise will supposedly have a very different tone than the Tim Story directed films; and will feature a completely CGI rendered version of the character The Thing (previously portrayed by a rubber-suit clad Micheal Chiklis).

Last week, ScreenRant reported that Fox is currently negotiating with actors Adrian Brody and Johnathan Rhys Meyers for the role of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. Today I've learned that the studio is very strongly leaning towards Brody; whose A-list status will help draw greater general audience interest in the project. Another name has now been added to the list, this time it's True Blood star Stephen Moyer. An offer is currently out for the actor to portray the villainous Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom. Though it is still unclear exactly how central the character will be in the film, Doom will be showcased as the ruler of Latveria and a master of the mystic arts.
More information has also surfaced by way of my inside source at Fox, who tells me that, if all goes as planned, the studio is planning on releasing Fantastic Four in the summer of 2012; which is the same timeframe as Marvel Studios' The Avengers. Though actress Amber Heard was in the early stages of negotiations for the role of Susan Storm/Invisible Woman, former X-Men: First Class actress Alice Eve is now the front runner for the part; as is Kevin Pennington for Johnny Storm/Human Torch.
The current screenplay for Fantastic Four has the team's origin taking place during the opening credits; ala The Incredible Hulk. The film has yet to sign a director, though meetings have already taken place between the studio and three contenders.
Funny thing is, there's no doubt in my mind that Moyer would run rings around that awful Doctor Doom from the previous FF franchise, Julian McMahon.  That said, this seems awfully unlikely, and in fact Moyer himself has stepped forward to deny it.

It would be kinda neat though, wouldn't it?  I'm sure it would make for a great blooper real: "Soookeh!!! Sorry, I mean Richaaaards!!!"

Adrien Brody or Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Mr. Fantastic

Adrien Brody or Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be Mr. Fantastic in the reboot of Fantastic Four which will not be titled ‘Fantastic Four Reborn.’

With Twentieth Century Fox about to start production on X-Men: First Class next week, their next Marvel film will be the reboot of Fantastic Fourn Alice Eve and Amber Heard in the running for the role of Sue Storm and we already know from our own chat with someone inside the Fox SFX department that The Thing will be entirely CGI this time around, but now we finally have some info about the leader of the team: Mr. Fantastic.

According to my sources, Fox is currently pursuing high caliber talent to play the man whose ability allows him to not only act as the local genius, but to be completely elastic. The two actors in the running for Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards are Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Adrien Brody.

As the hype, the love and the hate, and the endless speculation around X-Men: First Class continue, let's all start another war over a comic book movie reboot before it starts production!

I predict that in the future, clan-like warfare over comic film reboots will replace conventions as the fan activity of choice.

Also, we'll all have jetpacks and robot maids!

The 10 Most Screwed-Over Children of Superheroes in Comics

Being the child of a superhero seems like it would be a great deal on paper. Your parents can't give you a lot of shit for being hard to get a hold of because they're always out doing God-knows-what, you might get super powers of your own (or at least some cool gear if your folks don't have powers) and they've got to have some pretty rad stories to tell when they've had a few too many cocktails at the next family get together. But, what happens instead? Usually the kids get brutally killed. Or blinked out of existence. Or ditched because mom or dad can't give up the thrill of the chase. Or it turns out your children never existed because your husband's a robot. Or your parents never knew you existed in the first place. Here's a rundown of the top kids of superheroes who've had it the hardest over the years.

A decent list, and with only 10 to choose from you're gonna have some unfortunate omissions, and I saw some glaring ones, such as Jericho and Quicksilver, as noted in the comments.

Still, a good piece all in all, and a little bit of "damn, I'm glad that's not me" fun, or as Big Words would put it, schadenfreude.

‘G-Day’: Comic Book Industry Remembers Gruenwald and Wieringo

via blog.newsarama.com

Two creative giants taken way too soon. I was fortunate enough to meet Mark Gruenwald on a few occasions, and he was just a really pleasant, fun guy. Kindness and enthusiasm for people and comics just kinda oozed out of him.

I never met Mike Wieringo, but his work speaks for itself - this was a man who was clearly bursting with creativity and a passion for comics.

They both contributed an enormous amount to the world of comics, and they're both missed.

Graphic.ly - New Platform, New Comics

Digital comics publisher Graphic.ly - one company out of many leading the digital comics revolution, has made some bold moves in this, SDCC season, the time one wants to make such moves.

First off, they finally have an iPad app!  It is, in my opinion, pretty damn sweet.  But you know, you don't have to take my word for it, it's free and all so you can just grab it here and if you don't like it - nothing ventured, nothing lost.

Not sure I got that phrasing 100% right, but you get the idea.

They've got a whole bunch of new books added to their library, as well.  Here are the latest titles added to Graphic.ly's virtual inventory:

Archie

Betty #138, #139
Betty and Veronica #221

Bloodfire Studios
Intergalatic #1-3
Kindergoth #1-4

BOOM! Studios
Challenger Deep #1
Cover Girl #1-5
Fall of Cthulhu #1, 2
Galveston #1-4
Hawks of Outremer #1
Hunter's Moon #3-5
Irredeemable #14
Poe #1-2
Unthinkable #5
Kill Audio #1-6
Cold Space #2
Incorruptible #7
Swordsmith Assassin #1, 2

Lead Pipe
Contropussy #1
Japanese School Girls in Love

Marvel (iPhone/iPad only)
Avengers #56-72
The Amazing Spider-Man #2-25 (minus #17)
Captain America #1-10
Invincible Iron Man #1-2
Iron Man V4 #2-6

Paper Street Comics:
Pencilneck #1
Careful #1

Don't know why Amazing Spider-Man No. 17 was excluded, but I'm guessing it's either:

a) Fear of audience Osborn burnout

b) Steve Ditko's having a crazypants Ayn Rand objectivist fit; or

c) Something to do with weird Human Torch licensing drama. That, after all, is how we ended up with that Fantastic Four cartoon with that metallic abomination H.E.R.B.I.E. taking Johnny's place in the group way back in the mesozoic era of Marvel animation.

I honestly have no idea, but I'm going with b), just 'cause Ditko is known for two things: his creative genius and his crazy-pants freakouts.  In any case, kudos to Graphic.ly, and Viva La Digital Comics Revolución!
