With the Superman movie franchise set for a long-overdue reboot in 2013, the original, scrapped opening sequence to Bryan Singer's 2006 flop Superman Returns is one of the many extras included with the Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology Blu-ray.
The five minute sequence, while completely lacking in dialogue, speaks volumes about the failures of Superman Returns. It features Superman's search for Krypton, which is how Singer wanted to open the film, despite the fact that four movies and 60+ years of mythology were predicated on the fact that the one thing we know for certain about Krypton is that it ain't there.
It's quiet, brooding, and unbelievably expensive - this scene drained approximately ten million dollars from the film's budget before ending up on the cutting room floor. Let's hope the future holds better things for the Man of Steel.
