The Other Japanese Justice League

One of the many spin-offs of Final Crisis was the short-lived Super Young Team, a sort of young Japanese Justice League. Artist Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman) has taken the over-the-top elements of SYT further, back to Japanese '70s pop culture - heavy on the science heroes and giant mechs - and provided a look at a truly different vision of DC's heroes, which according to Project Rooftop, was almost approved by the pre-New 52 DC. Here's a look at what could have been.

Justice League: Doom finds Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Batman on their heels when a team of super villains discover and implement the Dark Knight’s “contingency plans” for stopping any rogue Justice League member. The story is inspired by Mark Waid’s much-heralded “JLA: Tower of Babel.”

The film features the voices of Nathan Fillion (Castle) as Green Lantern, Tim Daly (Private Practice) as Superman, and a grand reunion of actors who provided the voices of the Justice League for the cartoon of the same name and its follow-up, Justice League Unlimited, including Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Breaking In) as Flash, Susan Eisenberg (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) as Wonder Woman and Carl Lumbly (Alias) as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. Bumper Robinson (A Different World, Transformers: Animated) joins the cast as Cyborg. The cast features three villainous alumni of the Justice League animated series: Phil Morris (Smallville, Seinfeld) as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo (The Wonder Years) as Star Sapphire, and Alexis Denisof (Angel) as Mirror Master. Also opposing our heroes are Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) as Bane, Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files) as Metallo, and Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) as Cheetah. David Kaufman (Danny Phantom) also reprises his Justice League role of Jimmy Olsen.

The filmmaking team includes executive producer by Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery, producer Alan Burnett and dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano. Justice League: Doom is the final DC Universe film script from the late Dwayne McDuffie.

Voice cast members and filmmakers will be announced as confirmed for the event. The Paley Center for Media is located at 25 West 52nd Street, New York, NY.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new Justice League: Doom arrives February 28, 2012 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download. Both the Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack and DVD will include an UltraViiolet™ Digital Copy,

Justice League: Doom Gets Release Date

Warner Bros. has announced that the upcoming DC Universe animated feature Justice League: Doom will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 28, 2012.

Based on Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel" storyline from JLA, the film see the Justice League up against a foolproof plan designed to ht them at their weak points and utterly defeat them - a plan devised by Batman.

Doom is scripted by the late Dwayne McDuffie, who, among his many contributions to comics and animations, elevated animated comics adaptations to new heights of greatness with All-Star Superman. It boasts a voice cast of DCU mainstays including Kevin Conroy (Batman), Tim Daly (Superman), Michael Rosenbaum (Flash), and Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman) as well as Nathan Fillion who took over the voice of Green Lantern in the recent Emerald Knights. Carl Lumbly voices Martian Manhunter, and Bumper Robinson plays new addition Cyborg.

Ten-Minute Sneak Peek at 'Justice League: Doom'

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at the making of the upcoming Justice League: Doom. The movie features a DC Animated Universe dream team including stalwarts like Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tim Daly as Superman and Michael Rosenbaum as the Flash along with newcomer fan-favorites like Nathan Filion as Green Lantern, in an adaptation of the classic Mark Waid JLA storyline, "Tower of Babel".

Batman's greatest rival, Ra's al Ghul continues his quest to save Earth from humanity by thinning the ranks of the human populace. But after being thwarted over and over again, Ra's seeks to distract Batman by stealing the bodies of his dead parents while he enacts his nefarious plot. And to insure that Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash and the rest of the JLA do not interfere with his plans, he individually defeats each of the heroes using strategies developed by Batman himself! And when the League learn of his betrayal, they look to expel the Dark Knight from their ranks.

Awesome Art: Justice League Redesigned

The relaunched Justice League #1 did amazing sales, but opinions are split on Jim Lee's new costume designs for the team. Theres' no questioning Jim Lee's talent as an artist, but I fall into the camp that doesn't love all of the new costume elements: high collars, chin straps, knee pads and the like, don't wow me.

DC's Dan DiDio is known for confronting critics by asking what they would prefer, how it could possibly be done better. Well, Dresden Codak creator Aaron Diaz has stepped up with his answer, in the form these awesome redesigned Justice Leaguers. They also come complete with new origin stories and character bibles, which you can read on his blog.

His stated goals for redesigning characters for a reboot:

  1. Make the characters appealing to new readers, not just old ones
  2. Create new story opportunities while staying true to the core themes
  3. Update, correct and redesign where necessary

Check 'em out, and let me know what you think. How do Diaz's Justice Leaguers compare to Jim Lee's?

Galactus vs. the Justice League!

Call it the 'New 52 Point One'. Artist Marco Rudy drew this awesome sequence featuring a fight I'd love to see - Galactus vs. the Justice League! If the big two could only set aside their differences long enough to make this a reality, I think we'd see some truly record-setting sales figures on this one!

Am I crazy, or is Batman grinning just a little as Superman takes a beating from the Silver Surfer?

Awesome Art: Justice League at the Bar

(Click here or on the image to view full-size)

A look at the classic, pre-New 52 Justice League and pals, just relaxing at the old watering hole. Wonder Woman is the only one of the big 3 to indulge in a little alcohol, and hijinks ensue. Green Arrow is about five seconds away from screwing up his marriage - AGAIN. Ah, the good old days.

Also, Spider-Man is at the window and totally wants in.
